Asset Segmentation

Asset Segmentation is the process/practice of (notionally) breaking up network assets into discrete segments within a database.

In the case of a drainage network, segmentation of stormwater pipes is typically very straight forward, with a segment typically being the length of pipe between pits.

Road segmentation is typically more complex with intersection to intersection segmentation not always the most appropriate option as the characteristics of a road can vary significantly between intersections. And in the case of roundabouts and larger more complex intersections deciding whether to make the intersection a separate road segment or apportioning it between intersecting roads is not always an easy choice, as different segmentation schemes lend themselves to different competing needs. (e.g. ease of representation in the GIS, ease of valuation, ease of renewal planning.)
