Climate change is a long-term change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years.

Local Government Implications

The University of South Australia in collaboration with the LGA SA and the IPWEA and funding provided by the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility is currently running a research and development project which has the objective of developing a tool and predictive methods to determine what impact climate change may have on infrastructure assets.

Climate Change Adaptation

Whilst Councils like all organisations can do some things to lessen the amount they contribute climate change, it may be that the real work for Councils will be to help their residents adapt to climate change.

Things that Councils can do with respect to climate change adaptation, include:

  • Ensuring that new Council facilities are designed with an eye to climate change;
  • Ensuring (where possible) thermal comfort in private dwellings;
  • Engaging in and encouraging tree planting, and the development of urban forests;
  • Mapping thermal hot spots in the built environment;
  • Identifying where climate change may impact local bio-diversity;
