Consequences of Asset Failure

The consequences of asset failure are dependent on the asset type in question.

Water Pipe Failure Consquences

Pipe failure consquences can be classified into three categories2:

1. Direct Cost

  • repair
  • damage to nearby infrastructure
  • water lost

2. Indirect Cost

  • supply interruption to business
  • reduced fire fighting capacity due to decreased hydraulic capacity

3. Social Cost

  • reduction in water quality due to ingress of contaminants
  • deterioration of public trust
  • traffic disruption
  • disruption of water supply to critical facilities e.g. hospitals, home-dialysis
