Consultant
A consultant is a professional who provides professional or expert advice.
Councils engage consultants for a range of reasons, including those listed below.
- expertise is required on a short to medium term basis
- expertise required is not available to a specific council
- staff movement that leaves a council short staffed with no chance of finding the appropriate person in the short term
- a one off project that a permanent employee cannot be justified
- a new discipline that is currently not being practiced (well) by any council
- setting up a new structure, a new process, new procedures
- a major (unusual) complicated project management task (involving BIG $$$) - local experience might not be available
- assistance with activities that are not standard practice for council e.g community engagement using latest Web2.0 tools (Gov2.0)
