Criticality is the quality, state, or degree of being of the highest importance.
Asset Criticality
Asset Criticality is a measure of how critical an asset is to the functioning of and/or the services provided by an organisation.
The importance or degree of asset criticality has been proposed to be based on the consequences of failure, i.e. consequences of failure are assigned a criticality factor.
Elements that may impact on asset criticality include:
- Safety
- Cost of Failure
- Complexity
- Severity of Duty
- Impact of failure
- Impact on Environment
- Location
- Loss of service
- No of Customers Serviced
- Site function
- Public image impact
Social, environmental & economic factors may be considered.
Social may include
- Community disruption
- Health and safety
- Community disruption
- Litigation
Environmental factors that may need to be considered are
- natural waterways
- parks
- national parks
- recreational grounds
Economic
- business and commercial activities being disrupted
- costs to the community
Drainage Asset Criticality
The following factors may contribute to the criticality of a drainage asset:
- Sub-catchment size
- Culvert/pipe size & geometry
- Existence of environmental protection (e.g. trash racks and GPTs)
- Susceptability of sub-catchment to flooding
- Proximity to private structures and/or major roads
- Proximity to a discharge point
