Detention Basin

A Detention Basin is a large, open, free draining basin that temporarily “detains” collected stormwater runoff. These basins are normally maintained in a dry condition between storm events.

The main function of a detention basin is to temporarily store stormwater runoff to reduce downstream flowrates, thereby reducing flood peaks. It can also function as a sediment trap.
