Greater Taree City Council is located on the mid north coast of New South Wales. Located less than 3 hours north of Sydney, the region ranges from Johns River to the north, south toward Bunyah and west to Nowendoc. The Council covers an area of 3,752 km² and has a population of appriximately 48,000.
Population centres located within the municipality include Taree, Cundletown, Wingham, Tinonee, Old Bar, Kolodong, Harrington, Wallabi Point, Manning Point, Crowdy Head, Croki, Coopernook, Lansdowne, Moorland, Hannam Vale, Johns River, Stewarts River, Krambach, Dyers Crossing, Nabiac, Possum Brush and Hallidays Point.

The main administrative town is Taree, adjacent the Manning River. Taree and nearby Cundletown were settled in 1831 by William Wynter. Since then Taree has grown to a population of around 20,000 people and is the centre of a significant agricultural district. It is 16 km from the sea coast, and 317 km north of Sydney. Taree can be reached by train via the North Coast Railway, by the Pacific Highway and by air travel from Sydney by REX Airlines. The name Taree is derived from "tareebit" the local native Biripi word meaning tree by the river, or more specifically, the Sandpaper Fig.

Council

The first movement to establish a City of Greater Taree began in November 1959. The Taree Municipal Council applied to the Department of Local Government to extend its boundaries to the coastal area between Old Bar and Seal Rocks. In 1981, the City of Greater Taree was proclaimed, encompassing the Municipalities of Taree and Wingham and the Manning Valley Shire

Greater Taree City Council is composed of eight councillors elected proportionally, in addition to the mayor, who is directly elected. The current makeup of the council, elected in September 2008, is as follows: Mayor Paul J Hogan, Deputy Mayor David West, Councillor Kathryn Bell, Councillor David Keegan, Councillor Trent Jennison, Councillor Eddie Loftus, Councillor Mal Marks, Councillor Mave Richardson PSM and Councillor Alan Tickle.
