Landscaping

Landscaping refers to any activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land, including:

  • living elements, such as flora or fauna; or what is commonly referred to as gardening, the art and craft of growing plants with a goal of creating a beautiful environment within the landscape.
  • natural elements such as landforms, terrain shape and elevation, or bodies of water;
  • human elements such as structures, buildings, fences or other material objects created and/or installed by humans; and
  • abstract elements such as the weather and lighting conditions.

The term 'landscaping' is also regularly used as a noun to describe a defined area within a park or facility that has been enhanced by earthworks, plantings and/or similar improvements and has therefore been recognised in the controlling authority's financial system as an asset.

Data Standard for Road Management and Investment in Australia and New Zealand

Section 8.3.8 of the Data Standard for Road Management and Investment in Australia and New Zealand V2 defines 'landscaping' as areas that have been modified for visual effect and typically include planting or vegetation such as gardens.
