A Leachate Pond is a pond in which leachate (water containing dissolved contaminants) is collected and contained.
Leachate ponds are often associated with municipal landfills. Rain or other water falling on or entering a landfill will typically percolate through the rubbish buried below picking up contaminants such as organic and inorganic chemicals, metals, biological waste products of decomposition as it does. Obviously it is important not to allow harmful substances contained within the leachate to enter into the surrounding environment, and to avoid this as much leachate as possible and diverted into leachate ponds.
