Personal Electric Transportation Device

A Personal Electric Transportation Device (PETD) is an electrically powered device capable of transporting a human from one point to another and is typically used for recreational or commuting purposes.

Examples of personal electric transportation devices include:

  • segways,
  • hoverboards,
  • solowheels

Austroads is currently (September 2016) in the process of developing a regulatory framework for Personal Electronic Transportation Devices in Australia. The framework will outline which devices are classified as PETDs and where on the network PETDs would be permitted to operate, for instance footpaths, bicycle paths, local roads, arterial roads, etc.
