Place Name

A place name is the name of a city, town, township, suburb or locality.

In 1996, the Intergovernmental Committee for Surveying and Mapping and the Committee for Geographic Names in Australasia decided that all localities and suburbs should be officially bounded and named.

Suburb is the term usually reserved for urban communities, and locality is used in the rural context.

Localities should have:

  • well-defined boundaries
  • names that are not duplicated
  • names that are not prone to be mispronounced
  • names that are not offensive.
