Pressure Class

The pressure class refers to the pressure rating of a pipe. The rating is the minimum pressure and temperature at which the pipe is likely to burst. Different pipe materials will have different pressure classes.

For example for PVC pipes, Pipe pressure classes are:

  • PN 4.5 for nominal working pressure of 0.45 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 6 for nominal working pressure of 0.6 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 9 for nominal working pressure of 0.9 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 12 for nominal working pressure of 1.2 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 15 for nominal working pressure of 1.5 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 16 for nominal working pressure of 1.6 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 18 for nominal working pressure of 1.8 MPa at 20oC
  • PN 20 for nominal working pressure of 2.0 MPa at 20oC

For design and installation of PVC systems refer to AS/NZS 2032.
