Road Opening Permit

A Road Opening Permit is a permit that a road authority may require a plumber, contractor or other person to obtain, prior to excavating, boring or carrying out any other works that disturb the surface of a road, footpath or nature strip.

The road authority typically charges a fee for issuing a Road Opening Permit. The fee may be fixed amount or a amount per lineal or square metre depending on the work to be carried out.

Activities that may require a Road Opening permit, include:

  • driveway construction
  • service connections (water, electricity, telephone, gas, sewer etc)
  • storm water connections
  • water main construction
  • sewer main construction
  • conduit and/or pit installations for public utilities
  • under road bore
