The VicRoads Road Structures Inspection Manual defines a routine maintenance inspection is an inspection designed to check the general serviceability of the structure, particularly for the safety of road users, and identify any emerging problems.
The manual defines three levels of inspection and the Routine Maintenance Inspection is also known as a Level 1 Inspections.
The manual states that the following asset types should be the subject of a routine maintenance inspection of a regular basis (twice yearly):
- Bridges & Major Culverts
- Major Signs & Gantries
- Retaining Walls
- Noise Walls & Visual Walls
- High Mast Lighting Structures
- Emergency Median Barrier Access Gates
- Architectural Features & Historic Features
- Emergency Boom Gates
- Concrete Pavements on piles
- Emergency Bridging Systems
- Weigh-bridges
