Sewer Surcharge

Sewer surcharge refers to the overloading of the sewer beyond its design capacity due to inflow and infiltration of water. A surcharging sewer often results in sewer overflow at manholes and customers' over flow relief gully, ORG.

Sewer surcharge incidence can be reduced by

  • designing a system that can adequately deal with increased flows
  • regular inspection to assist with identifying defective sewers or manholes and taking appropriate action
  • ensuring that pumping stations have adequate emergency storage capacity
