Sorell Council

Sorell Council is situated 25 km east of Hobart and extends from Fingerpost Road on the Tasman Highway to approximately 2 km south of the Dunalley Hotel at Dunalley. The total land area of the municipality is 582.6 km2.

In recent years the town of Sorell has grown significantly, as it has become a regional, commercial and business centre for the South East region of the State. For the last 12 years the municipality has experienced the fastest rate of growth in Tasmania and currently has a population of 12,428. The population grew by 10.2% over the period 2001 to 2006.

Projections to 2021 (CEDA LGAT population aging project 2004) are that Sorell’s population will grow by 33%, the greatest gain by two-fold of any southern Tasmanian Council and the only Council with projections for increases in youth in the 0-24 year categories.
