Sub-surface Drain

A Sub-surface Drain (also Sub-soil Drain) is a slotted pipe installed beneath the ground and designed to drain areas affected by excessive sub-soil water. Sub-surface drains are often installed at the rear of allotments and behind the back of kerb & channel. They are also used by irrigators to stop the roots of some plants such as grape vines becoming water logged.

In some municipalities (Mildura Rural City Council for example) new residential allotments in former horticultural areas must be checked for the existence of horticultural sub-soil drains. If drains are found measures need to be taken to ensure that they do not effect the soil moisture levels beneath new dwellings.
